Philosophies and systems and curricula, oh my!

So far, the hardest part of homeschooling is deciding HOW. If you’re a homeschooling parent, you know what I mean, and if you’re not, just trust me on this: there are a gazillion ways to skin this cat. Classical education, unit studies, unschooling, on and on it goes, and devotees of every different philosophy ready to sing the praises of their chosen system. I’m so grateful that someone said to me, very early on, that there are no educational emergencies. I could get frustrated that we haven’t found our academic groove yet, but when that happens, I have to remember where Carter was emotionally a few months ago. He’s so much more comfortable now, some lost time won’t hurt anything. We’ll make it up later. For now, we read lots of books, cook together, go for walks, and he hunts for lizards.

Meanwhile, lapbooks? Workboxes? Boxed curricula? Gaaah!

  1. I love this: “trust me on this: there are a gazillion ways to skin this cat” I think we’ve tried all of them. A unit here, a well trained mind there. I’ve finally settled on “eclectic”.
